Personal R&D · Houdini · Procedural terrain
The challenge
Convincing cliffs need an underlying structure: layers, folds and fractures that relate to one another. I began this research to explore how geological processes could guide procedural rock creation.
The approach
I built a collection of Houdini workflows for sedimentary strata, folded layers, fine laminae and directed fracture. VDB operations establish the layers, while attributes preserve their relationships through later stages of segmentation and rock formation. I also used TOPs to process heavy geometry as part of the research.
The value
The project is an evolving study rather than a finished geological simulator. Its strongest idea is to let formation structure drive surface detail, giving me a foundation for exploring more believable cliffs and a practical way to learn new procedural workflows.
