Steel Hunters · Houdini / MaterialX · Environment shading
The challenge
Repeated tiling textures can become conspicuous across large environment surfaces. I needed a compact way to introduce variation into the coordinates used by a material.
The approach
I built a MaterialX helper that combines coordinate distortion with cell-based rotation and scale variation. Exposed controls set the overall scale, distortion and variation ranges, and the asset outputs transformed coordinates for the surrounding shader to use.
The value
The helper makes coordinate variation reusable and easy to art-direct across materials. Its role is deliberately focused: provide varied texture coordinates as one part of the shading setup. The final appearance and seam handling depend on the texture and the material connected around it.
