Jurassic Park game trailer · Houdini · Environment FX

The challenge

A trailer shot needed ground built from successive layers of scattered rocks. The challenge was to combine controlled placement with the way rocks settle against the terrain and against one another.

The approach

I combined masks and reusable asset libraries with scattering and rigid-body passes. Each rock layer contributes to the collider for the next, so later pieces respond to the forms already established. A transform-extraction and reconstruction workflow preserves the simulated placements for use with source rock geometry.

The value

This made the ground-building process a sequence of manageable passes, with separate control over distribution, settling and geometry detail. The key production idea was to solve placement using suitable working geometry, then carry that arrangement forward into the detailed environment.
